Sunday Scaries Who?
The Sunday Scaries have become a phenomenon in our culture. You know the ones, the anxieties that creep in Sunday night right before “real life” starts again on Monday morning. The freedom gained over the weekend is over and responsibilities come back into view.
You do not have to live dreading Mondays or the start of your week.
While there are some bigger picture questions to address regarding Sunday Scaries such as…
Is the dread for the work week a sign for a change?
What ways can you maximize your days off to rejuvenate yourself to feel better prepared to start the week?
What is the exhaustion and anxiety before the week telling you?
I recommend asking yourself the above questions to gain information on what you are needing. While that can be helpful, I also understand that it may not be possible to quit a job you hate, to cut out exhausting tasks, or take the vacation you so badly deserve.
In the meantime of discovering yourself, there are some helpful ways to manage the anxiety that comes with the end of the weekend.
Write it out – journal out your thoughts, fears, to do lists, feelings, annoyances, anything floating around your mind that is detracting from your time to be present.
Complete simple tasks – We all have those daunting tasks that create noise in the back of our minds. One of mine is the dishes. I know I will sleep better and feel more relaxed if those dishes are put away before I wind down for the night and start the week. It can feel impossible to get up and just start these tasks. Once I start, I feel clearer and accomplished.
Tea – A cup of tea can signal to the brain it is the end of the weekend. My go to is usually a peppermint tea (even better to double up with chamomile). Remember caffeine free before bed :)
Nighttime routine – Setting up a consistent routine can be a game changer for anxiety. A consistent routine to signal to your mind and your body that you are getting ready to wind down and that it’s time for bed.
Limit social media – it’s well known that social media and screen time can increase anxiety levels. Limiting this during a Sunday afternoon may decrease the apprehension you’re already experiencing due to the incoming week.
This is a great place to get started. I’d love to hear what has worked for you in combating the Sunday Scaries and taking back your peace!
As always, healing starts here, wherever you are.
